چکیده

The increasing stress on mobile radio access performance in a context of declining revenues for operators is requiring the evolution of transport networks (backhaul and fronthaul), which currently work decoupled. The heterogeneity of the nodes and transmission technologies inter-connecting the fronthaul and backhaul segments makes the network quite complex, costly and inefficient to manage flexibly and dynamically. In order to meet 5G requirements in a cost-effective manner, 5G-Crosshaul is designing a 5G transport network that unifies the data, control, and management planes . O n the one hand, this paper includes an overview, from a data-plane perspective, of the unified network architecture proposed by 5GCrosshaul project, discussing the different enabling transport and multiplexing technologies. O n the other hand, it also presents one of the main concepts of this project, a novel multi -layer switch architecture that enables the multiplexing of fronthaul and backhaul traffic within the same transport network. 1 Keywords—5G architecture, fronthaul, backhaul, transport network, switch architecture

5G-Crosshaul: An SDN/NFV control and data plane architecture for the 5G integrated Fronthaul/Backhaul

This paper presents the control and data plane architecture design for a 5G transport solution (5G-Crosshaul) with the aim of integrating the fronthaul and backhaul network segments in a common transport stratum. The control plane relies on the SDN/NFV concept to control and orchestrate the different elements of the network (the 5G-Crosshaul Control Infrastructure, XCI). The data plane is based...

5G-XHaul: a converged optical and wireless solution for 5G transport networks

The common European ICT sector vision for 5G is that it should leverage on the strengths of both optical and wireless technologies. In the 5G context, a wide spectra of radio access technologies – such as millimetre wave transmission, massive MIMO, and new waveforms – demand for high capacity, highly flexible and convergent transport networks. As the requirements imposed on future 5G networks r...

Software-Defined Wireless Transport Networks for Flexible Mobile Backhaul in 5G Systems

Traditionally microwave backhaul has been configured and operated in a static manner by means of vendor specific management systems. This mode of operation will be difficult to adapt to the new challenges originated by 5G networks. New mechanisms for adaptation and flexibility are required also in this network segment. The usage of a signaled control plane solution (based on OpenFlow) will faci...

Software-Defined 5G Networks: Challenges, and Technologies

The commoditization of key processing components coupled with virtualization of infrastructure functions will lead to a radical change in the economics of mobile networks. The latter will help network providers (e.g., MNO, MVNO) move from proprietary hardware and software platforms towards open and flexible cellular systems based on general-purpose cloud infrastructures. In this context, 5G sys...

5G transport network requirements for the next generation fronthaul interface

To meet the requirements of 5G mobile networks, several radio access technologies, such as millimeter wave communications and massive MIMO, are being proposed. In addition, cloud radio access network (C-RAN) architectures are considered instrumental to fully exploit the capabilities of future 5G RANs. However, RAN centralization imposes stringent requirements on the transport network, which tod...
